Just getting started?
Joining the Web is a fun and exciting
experience. It does require however that you do some things to
prepare. Ask for a checklist that will help you with this process.
In the mean time be sure to read “intent“, “content”,
and “images” below.
• Intent
Purpose
Know what your intent is with your site and refer to it often
in order to keep your focus.
Concept
Most people don’t need an elaborate website, and, in fact,
elaborate can sometimes mean less effective. My intent with this
site, for example, is to make you feel confident in my abilities
as a web builder and give you information to help you get started.
www.what?
What is your web address going to be?
You can go to www.register.com to try out different ideas; if
your choices are already taken, they will suggest variations for
you, but hold off on registering until we have discussed your
hosting options.
• Content
Writing
Keeping text brief is the first rule when
writing for the internet. Short pointed paragraphs and lists are
the most effective methods. Keep in mind that your visitors are
not here to read, they’re gathering information.
Communicating
As with any type of production, know your
audience; write for them, make them comfortable, and keep them
interested. I can offer editing by a qualified editor if you need
one, but not rewriting. Having your copy in order will speed up
the site building process.
• Images
Limitations
Remember the adage, “garbage in
garbage out”? That’s not always true when you’re
working with Photoshop. Amazing things can happen to your images,
so don’t rule something you really want out just because
it has a defect. Also keep in mind that the images and graphics
that you choose often set the tone for the site's design; they
can be inspiring or they can impose limitations.
Format
At some point your images need to become
digital- if you can email them then that has already been done.
I can also do your digital photography or scan your graphics for
you.
